RATING: 6 / 10

Clues allowed: Too many
Did we beat it? Yes! This room had been open officially for one week, two total with beta testing. We were the first team to make it out and set the record of 55:49.

Imagine that you have been sent back to the 1920s. Now imagine that you have been sent back to the 1920s and there is a beast on the loose. Not just any beast, but a magical one. Can't believe it? Then you truly must be a muggle! This brand new room is based on the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. As a HUGE Harry Potter fan I was eager to check this room out.

For those who have not been to an escape room that has been put on by a theatre company, I highly recommend it! Having an actor as your Game Master or as part of the room brings it to a whole new level. The actor in our room, Professor McGoggles, helped set the stage as we stepped into our room.

The most fascinating part of the room was the newer (or new to me) technology they were using to really make magic come to life. Using sensors and an app to control certain things we were given the opportunity "cast spells" to unlock or open different clues. The creativity here got major bonus points! That being said this is a BRAND NEW ROOM. Naturally, we ran into some technical difficulties. Our room actually started about 20 minutes late due to some of the glitches. Having just opened to the public on September 26th, if you are going to this room soon PLEASE give them some grace as they work out the kinks. I would love to try this room again once it has been up and moving (and once I have forgotten all the answers) to get the fully experience.

As a more advanced player the issue I ran into was our particular Game Master. We were a mixed group of new to advanced players. Now remember this room JUST opened so it's possible our Game Master REALLY wanted us to make it out of the room. However, whenever we got a clue and potentially weren't on the right course he immediately gave us clues to point us in the right direction. While this may have been great for newer players it really took the challenge out for me and left me disappointed.

This room is GREAT for novice-average escapers. It was unique and really set itself apart from other rooms I have tried. Definitely a must do for those Harry Potter fans of all ages! I would love to go back to SLC to try out the other rooms they have available!
